German champions THW Kiel are facing the next longterm loss. Line player René Toft Hansen suffered a serious knee injury during his teams 31:28 win over Bergischer HC. Following an unlucky collision the Dane had to be carried off the field on a stretcher. “Toft told me he heard a crack in his knee and expects it to be completely finished. We hope he is wrong with this assumption”, coach Alfred Gislason said at the press conference. The incident happened almost six minutes into the second half, a Gummersbach player had slipped and fell onto THWs captain Rene Toft Hansen in an unlucky manner. He immediately screamed and held on to his knee, which had been bent outwards at a 45 degree angle as he fell. The THW captain was treated for minutes by THWs physio Maik Bolte, BHCs doctors and ambulance staff, before being carried off on a stretcher amongst encouraging clapping by the crowd which had been completely silent during the treatment. The record champions already had to do without German internationals Patrick Wiencek (cruciate ligament rupture), Dominik Klein (dilation of the cruciate ligament), Spanish international Joan Canellas (back pain) and Rune Dahmke (ankle injury). Additionally right wing players Christian Sprenger was also unavailable. Playmaker Domagoj Duvnjak played irrespective of a ruptured tendon in his ankle. Torsten Janssen in contrast made his first short appearance after several months of injury related break. “We cannot cover our losses limitless, we had to change around and get players to play on unusual positions”, Alfred Gislason explained during the post match press conference and looked ahead: “The international break is coming up now and we have a lot of work ahead of us to ensure we have some kind of working team ready to continue our season.”
